Step is the modernization of gumboot dancing that originated in South Africa. Within the mining communities as they were prohibited to speak during slavery and dance became their communication. This style of dance involves making beats and/or rhythms by hitting various parts of the body together or against the ground (e.g. stomping, clapping etc.)
